FT. GAINES, GEORGIA. . .Kenneth Maxwell Penuel, a resident of Ft. Gaines, Georgia, died Tuesday afternoon, January 12, 2021, in a Dothan hospital. He was 75.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
Kenny Penuel was born and reared in the Haleburg Community in Henry County, Alabama, son of the late George and N.E. Penuel. Kenny was the brother of the late Nancy Penuel Holland. He was a 1964 graduate of Headland High School where he played football (#60 Go Rams!). Kenny was a graduate of Auburn University where he received both a B.S. and Master’s Degree in Agricultural Engineering. He believed in Auburn and was a lifelong Auburn Tiger. He loved attending Auburn football and basketball games and had the loudest “WAR EAGLE!” in the room. While at Auburn, Kenny participated in the Army R.O.T.C. program and served two years in the U. S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant while stationed in Germany. He later received a MBA Degree from UAB.
Kenny was employed for his entire career with Alabama Power Company and the Southern Company and was the Project Manager for the construction of the Alabama Power Company headquarters in Birmingham.
He retired in 2003 and moved to Ft Gaines where he began to volunteer full time in service of his beloved local community. Kenny loved his town. He took a special interest in providing opportunities to young men in Fort Gaines. If someone needed $20, Kenny found a job he could do to earn it. If one wanted a full-time job, Kenny would help with the application. If one wanted to go to college, Kenny would help there, too.
As a resident of Ft. Gaines, Kenny served as chairman of the Clay County Economic Development Council. His volunteer work facilitated construction of hiking/biking trails, negotiations for the new Silicon Ranch solar farm investing in Clay County and renovation of the WWII Quonset hut to be the new home of the Clay County Fire Department and EMS. He loved our beautiful lake and was proudly supportive of the Friends of Lake Eufaula. Of all his civic accomplishments, he was most proud of his role in establishing the Mercer Medical Clinic of Clay County. He was also an active member of the Ft. Gaines Presbyterian Church and was instrumental in the addition of the fellowship hall.
Kenny Penuel had vision. He loved history. He saw the beauty in old buildings and did his part in the restoration of many in Fort Gaines. He also had a passion for home design and spent countless hours planning and renovating the homes of friends and family. If you knew Kenny Penuel for long enough, you were surely going to end up with an open floor plan and incredible lighting.
Surviving members of this close-knit and loving family include his lifelong sweetheart of a wife, Ann Shelley Penuel; His children and grandchildren, of whom he was impossibly proud; Leigh Ann, Patrick, Mason and Amelia Chapman; Brad, Andressa and Max Penuel; Family members; Rabon Holland; Jane and Will Pitchford; Phil and Jan Shelley and best friends Thomas and Kay Roney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vivian B. Adams School, 2047 Stuart Tarter Road, Ozark, AL 36360 or to the Ft. Gaines Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 157, Ft. Gaines, GA 39851 or your favorite local charity.
