WEBB, ALABAMA. . .Lavaughn Joseph Barley, a resident of Webb, passed away Friday morning, April 28, 2023, in a Dothan hospital. He was 89.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 3, 2023, in the Webb Baptist Church with Pastor Danny Sumerlin officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in the Ashford City Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Wednesday in the church sanctuary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Webb Baptist Church, P.O. Box 70, Webb, AL 36376.

Mr. Barley was born and reared in the Piney Grove Community, near Samson, son of the late J. V. Barley and Frances Chappell Davis Barley. At an early age, he enlisted in the Army National Guard in the Samson unit which was activated during the Korean War. Mr. Barley lived in Samson and Ashford before moving to Webb in 1976. He retired in 1997 as the owner and operator of the Western Auto in Ashford. Mr. Barley had previously owned and operated the Western Auto in Columbia. In earlier years, he was employed by Wiregrass Electric Co-Op in Hartford.

Mr. Barley was an active member of the Webb Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and on most church committees. He was a former member of the Ashford Lions Club and served as its President, and was also a former member of the Columbia Lions Club.  Mr. Barley was a member of the Ashford Masonic Lodge No 493 and the Houston County Cattlemen’s Association. He formerly served on the Board of Directors of the Ashford Farmer’s Co-Op and the Board of Directors of the Bank of Columbia and as a volunteer for the Future Masters in Dothan. Mr. Barley was engaged in cattle farming for many years. He was a proud member of Tigers Unlimited of Auburn University. Mr. Barley was preceded in death by two brothers, Terrell Wayne Barley and Arthur Glen Barley.

Lavaughn was known for his warm personality, compassion, caring and love for his family and friends. Some friends also knew him at “LJ”. Lavaughn’s presence will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing him. As we mourn his passing, we are reminded of the joy he brought to our lives and the countless ways in which he made the world a brighter place. His spirit and will power will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who loved him.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Doris Simmons Barley; their love and commitment to one another was evident in every aspect of their lives and they created countless memories together including being avid sport fans and enthusiastic supporters of the Auburn Tigers for many years. In addition to following the Auburn Tigers, he spent many enjoyable hours with friends and family and caring for his precious cows on his farm in Webb, Alabama. He is also survived by two sisters, Nina Barley Scott and Jean Barley McLean, both of Dothan; a sister-in-law, Sylvia Simmons Alford and her husband, Joel K. Alford, Athens, AL; several nieces and nephews.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Jimmy Bryan, Ronnie Davis, Ronald DeVane, Aaron Cornett, Jamar Ivey, Glenn Dickerson, Hunter Hayles, Lamar Ivey, Denny Williams, Bobby Taylor and John Ivey.
