Mr. Leemon Joseph Shirah of Geneva, Alabama passed away Monday, August 13, 2012. He was 98.


 


Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012, at Eden Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Hollis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home Geneva directing. Family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday, from 6 until 8 p.m.


 


Mr. Shirah was born December 13, 1913, in Geneva Co. AL to the late Joseph Lloyd and Mae Howard Shirah. He was a faithful member of Eden Baptist Church for several years, as well as a member of the Masonic Lodge 129 for more than 60 years. In the early 1930’s Mr. Shirah helped build the levee around the City of Geneva, operating a slip scoop with mules. Mr. Shirah was an amateur boxer in Samson. Undefeated, having never been knocked down he earned the nick-name “CHAMP”.


 


In addition to his parents, his wife, Wilemma Shirah; one sister, Katherine Shirah; three brothers: Kenneth, Willie Lloyd, and Frank Shirah all preceded him in death.


 


Survivors include one daughter, Jeris Herbert, Cottonwood;  two sons:  Don Leemon  Shirah (Janet) and Joe Shirah both of Geneva; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
