MIDLAND CITY…Leonard Burke Alverson, a resident of Midland City, died Friday, August 31, 2018, at his home. He was 89.


     Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday, September 4, 2018, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Benny Cole and Reverend Randy Kuhn officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will follow at Gardens of Memory. Family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Tuesday at the mortuary in Headland.


     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Cedar Grove Baptist Church, c/o Pam Parker, PO Box 1055, Midland City, AL 36350 or Kindred Hospice, 2740 Headland Ave, Dothan, AL 36303.


     Mr. Alverson was born on May 16, 1929 in Wilsonville, Alabama, son of the late James Burke Alverson and Maggie Mae Dorough Alverson. He lived in various locations in the United States and overseas while serving in the United States Army. Mr. Alverson retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of Master Sergeant after 24 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Alverson received a Purple Heart for wounds received during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. 87, Dothan Chapter, and the Dothan Chapter of the V.F.W. Mr. Alverson was a member of the Wilsonville Masonic Lodge 510. After his retirement from the military, he owned and operated Alverson’s Union 76 Station in Midland City for six years and was also employed by the U.S. Civil Service at Ft. Rucker. He was a member of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Alverson was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Betty Lou Marshall Alverson; a daughter, Deloris Alverson; three sisters; two brothers; two step-brothers; and two sons-in-law, Steve Fontenot and Donny Spikes.


     Surviving relatives include three daughters, Rebecca Fontenot, Deborah “Dee” Spikes and Teresa Dehne (Steve); a sister, Martha Averett; a step-sister, Geralee Kelly; five grandchildren, Jennifer Baker (Neil), Jason Fontenot (Jessica), Dylan Wilson, Jenna Dehne and Taylor Dehne; and eight great-grandchildren, Wheeler and Brennyn Fisher, Riley, Peyton and Hayden Fontenot, Christian Wilson, Madeline Jones and Maisie Crawford.
