ABBEVILLE, ALABAMA. . .Lester Sheppard “Gabby” Roberts, a resident of Abbeville, died  Thursday morning, August 10, 2023, at his home. He was 81.

            Memorial services, with military honors, will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, August 19, 2023, in the Judson Baptist Church with Reverend Brandon Turner and Chaplain Ernie Gray officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.

            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SouthernCare Hospice, 2576 Montgomery Highway Suite 2, Dothan, AL 36303.

            Lester “Gabby” Roberts was born and reared in Plant City, Florida, son of the late William Sheppard Roberts and Mildred Meyer Roberts. Upon graduation from Plant City High School, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was assigned to the USS Forrestal Supercarrier. Mr. Roberts served his country six years during the Vietnam War. After his military service, he returned home to Plant City and joined the IBEW Local 915 in Tampa, Florida. Mr. Roberts retired after fifty-three years employment with IBEW as a Master Electrician. He moved to his home at Thomas Mill Creek on Lake Eufaula in Henry County, Alabama in 2005 and spent much of his time woodworking. Mr. Roberts was a talented carpenter and built most of the furniture in his lake home. He actively attended Judson Baptist Church. Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by an infant sister, Edith Roberts, another sister, Esther Peterman, and two brothers, Leroy Roberts and Lawrence Roberts.

            Surviving relatives include his wife, Barbara Alford Roberts; a daughter, Robin Ehmer (Marty), Masillon, Ohio; a son, Jerry Stockstill, Abbeville; four sisters, Ethel Smith, Christine Johnson, Patricia Torres and Barbara Hawkins (Doug); four grandchildren, Ryan Ehmer, Evan Ehmer, Jessie Ehmer and Nicholas Agee; several nieces and nephews.
