Lural Jane Lowry Dunlap died on August 10, 2023. She was born in Gainesville, FL on October 11, 1934. She attended P.K. Yonge (K-12) and then graduated from the University of Florida with a BA in education. She was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. Lural taught school for 30+ years and loved it! The first place Lural checked everywhere she moved was the library. She loved reading and declared it made her the “best ever” first-grade teacher.

Lural and her beloved husband, Joe Dunlap, started dating in high school and married in 1955. Their marriage lasted 66 years. Joe died in Dothan in 2020. Their children are John Witherspoon Dunlap (Lynn) living in Melrose, FL, Jennifer Lowry Dunlap (deceased), and Amy Dunlap Edge (Vince) living in Dothan, AL. Two granddaughters Hannah Edge Szell (David) and Lowry Hinson Edge survive her. She was an amazing mother and grandmother who loved us all well.

Lural and Joe traveled extensively during their early years of marriage as Joe was a Naval Aviator and Eastern Airlines pilot.

Lural loved being a part of the Gainesville community. She was a member of Jr Women’s Club, Junior League, Azalea Garden Club, bridge groups, and tennis clubs.

Lural loved her church, First Presbyterian Church, and had several roles there. She taught 2-year-olds for 10 years, was on the preschool board, was an elder, attended Bible studies, and was a front office worker.

Lural and Joe moved to Dothan, AL five years ago. Lural took care of Joe at home until the end of his life. Lural was especially fond of the people of Dothan. She had Jamestown neighborhood friends, Community Bible Study friends, and all of Amy’s friends. She impacted all the people she knew with her stories and joy. She loved Jesus and often said she could not wait to meet Jesus and Joe with a full head of hair. She loved with a sacrificial love that will leave her mark on us. We are forever grateful for her life and legacy.

A Celebration of Lural’s Life will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, August 15, 2023 at Calvary Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. She will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville, FL at 2pm (EST) on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wiregrass Hope Group, Dothan AL, or to Respite Care of Dothan, AL, or to Community Bible Study of Dothan, AL, or to First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, FL.
