Margarette Powers Ellis joined her heavenly father after an extended illness at her home with her husband at her side on Friday, February 10, 2012 at the age of 74. She was a long time resident of Wicksburg.


Services will be 10 am Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park with Robert Byrd directing. Memorials may be made to Hospice Care of Dothan.


Mrs. Ellis was born October 12, 1937 in Henry County to the late Rev. Daniel Rufus Powers and the late Ruth Money Powers. She grew up outside of Abbeville around what many know as the Old Trail, she shared many interesting stories of growing up there. She went on to marry John B. Ellis and this April 15, 1967, in Mineral Wells, TX and they would have been married 45 years this year. Mrs. Ellis contributed much of her time to her family and community. She was PTO and Band Booster president at her daughter Tammy’s school during the 1980’s. After her daughter graduated, she traveled to other countries including Italy, Greece, and even to Israel with her husband. They also traveled to every state in America including Hawaii and Alaska. In her later years she volunteered for many organizations such as the National Peanut Festival, RSVP, and Flowers Hospital where she was recognized for over 22 years of service. Among her other talents she painted, and many of her paintings are displayed around the community. She created numerous arts and crafts, from angels to scrapbooks of her many journeys. She often told people what her answer was to a happy life, "Your folks taught you right from wrong, be good to yourself, and help others anyway you can."


Mrs. Ellis was preceded in death by her parents Rev. Daniels Rufus Powers and Ruth Money Powers, a brother Lloyd Powers, and a sister Edna Phillips; a loving canine companion Pepper.


Survivors include her husband John B. Ellis of Newton; son Danny (Wendy) Lee of Slocomb; daughter Tammy Ellis of Wicksburg; grandchildren, Danielle Maria Ellis of Wicksburg, Bonnie, Terry, and Joshua Lee of Slocomb; brother Daniel Powers of Cottonwood also survives.
