COLUMBIA. . .Margret “Peggy” Hagood Oakley, a resident of Columbia, died early Wednesday morning, October 26, 2022, at her home. She was 94.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, October 28, 2022, in the Columbia City Cemetery with Pastor Vann Cooley and Pastor Jeff Brewer officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the mortuary in Headland. At other times, the family will be at the residence in Columbia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Columbia, P.O. Box 267, Columbia, AL 36319 or to the Camp Springs Baptist Church, 13205 County Road 53, Columbia, AL 36319.

Mrs. Oakley was born in Sheffield, Alabama and was reared in Albertville, Alabama, daughter of Dr. Edwin White Hagood and Imogen Scarborough Hagood. She was a graduate of Albertville High School and received an Education Degree from Howard College (Samford University). Mrs. Oakley later received a Master’s Degree in Education from Troy State University in Dothan (Troy University). She lived in Columbia most of her lifetime. Mrs. Oakley was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbia and also attended Camp Springs Baptist Church.  She was retired from the Houston County High School in Columbia as an English teacher. Mrs. Oakley was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Flake Oakley, III, a granddaughter, Melissa Oakley, a sister, Dr. Martha Hagood and a brother, Dan Hagood.

Surviving relatives include a daughter, Cynthia Oakley Martin (Bobby), Hoover, AL; three sons, Walter Flake Oakley, IV (Kay), Montgomery; Edwin Hagood Oakley (Carolyn), Dothan; and Paxton Fields Oakley (Sheila), Columbia; grandchildren, Joseph Martin (Wendy), Daniel Oakley, Trey Oakley (Kasey), Nicole Brents (Masoud), Michael Oakley (Amanda), Kendall Oakley, Tammie Grantham (Jim), Calvin Knighton (Christi), Brad Knighton (Tera), Megan Thompson (Justin);  great-grandchildren, Casen Martin, Ellery Martin, Griffin Oakley, Groves Oakley, Conner Hicks (Derek), Blake Hicks (Kenzie), Preston Hancock, Cal Knighton, Anna Klaire Knighton, Brady Bennett and Baylee Bennett;  great-great-grandchildren, Maddox Hicks and Rett Thompson; a special niece, Barber Clark.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Daniel Oakley, Michael Oakley, Trey Oakley, Joseph Martin, Calvin Knighton and Brad Knighton.
