Mary Jeannette Watson Hicks, 96, of Columbus, GA passed away Friday, November 3, 2023.
A visitation will be held from 9:30AM to 11:30 AM EST Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at McMullen Funeral Home, 3874 Gentian Blvd. Columbus, GA 31907. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 PM CST Tuesday, November 7, 2023 at Hebron Baptist Church Cemetery, 6952 State 134 East, Columbia, AL 36319, with Reverend George Bryan officiating and Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations in charge of local arrangements.
Mrs. Hicks was born October 29, 1927 in Headland, AL. She was a daughter of the late Franklin Coleman Watson and the late Gertie Lee Killingsworth Watson. Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, James M. Hicks; siblings, Edward Watson, Bob Watson, Agnes Bullard, Janice Snider, Jonnie Adams and Jerry Watson.
Survivors include her daughter, Romona Hicks Griffin of Columbus, GA; granddaughters, Kelei Griffin Sabatino (Jason) of Roswell, GA, Reagan Griffin Sauls (Trey) of Johns Creek, GA; great grandchildren: Alexander Sabatino, Aubrey Sabatino and Griffin Sauls.
One of seven children, Jeannette was known for her devout faith, kindness, generosity, fashionable dress, humorous stories, southern cooking, vegetable and flower gardens and her love for her family.
Her green thumb and ability to grow flowers and plants was widely known as anything she touched flourished. Throughout her life in Jonesboro, Georgia, her yard and garden were a source of pride and joy. She grew everything from roses to okra. One of her favorite rare plants was a midnight cactus that only bloomed once a year after dusk emitting the sweetest aroma and the most delicate blooms.
Raised on the farm, she loved all things outdoors and had a heart for all animals. Genteel as they come, she was a one of a kind southern lady. Always ready at a moment’s notice, she would provide a full southern meal for any visitor, complete with chicken and dumplings, fried okra, turnips, fried cornbread and of course a homemade pound cake.
One of her amazing attributes was making everyone feel special and loved. Whether it was painting her granddaughters’ nails or taking candy to her friends at Orchard View, she loved giving to others. Her sweet spirit and generosity drove her to provide many people with her crocheted blankets to take with them so they continued to feel her love after they left her presence.
Every summer when her granddaughters were younger, she would take them on vacation where she spoiled them with homemade ice cream, milk shakes and trips to the toy store. When she was not traveling with them, she loved to go fishing, drive to the mountains and attend family reunions.
She was a member of Jonesboro Baptist Church for decades. During the 70’s, she worked in retail at the iconic Rich’s flagship department store in downtown Atlanta. She was one of the only people in Georgia that assisted breast cancer patients with a prosthesis fitting. For over 35 years she worked at the Richs/Macy’s Department Store in the lingerie department
Her family was always important to her which showed as she embraced technology by learning how to keep in touch with her great-grandchildren through her iPhone and Facetime, she would even text a time or two. During her 96 years, she touched so many people and gave her family and all who met her a shining example of grace, generosity and love.
