Mary Nell Grimes

Mary Nell Grimes went peacefully to be with our Lord in the early morning hours on Tuesday, August 7^th, 2018.  She was surrounded by her family.

 Funeral services for Mrs. Grimes will be held at 10AM Thursday, August 9, 2018 in the Chapel of the Angels at Woodland, Family First Funeral Care, 965 Woodland Drive, Dothan, AL with Reverend Jerry Grandstaff and Music Minister Billy Rich officiating with Family First Funeral Care directing. The family will receive friends from 9AM until service time. A private burial will be held at Memory Hill Cemetery.

Born Mary Nell Barley on September 29, 1927 to Cora and Joseph Barley, Mary was raised in the Battens Crossroads community with two sisters and four brothers.  She attended Enterprise High School.  After the onset of World War Two, she met and married the love of her life, William Harris Grimes, on December 24, 1943. Mary and Harris lived in Level Plains, Alabama, before homesteading in Dothan in 1952.  She assisted her husband by keeping the books in their businesses- Cain and Grimes Auto Repair and later Dick and Grimes Auto Service.  

Mary and Harris were proud parents of four sons – Charles, Mickey, David and Steve.  After rearing four sons, she embarked on a career outside of the home with First Alabama Bank in the Newcomers Division welcoming new citizens to the Dothan area.  Mary was particularly proud of her work and friends from the Panama Canal Zone where she recruited new citizens to the Dothan area as well as encouraged them to join the First Alabama Bank family upon arrival.  She retired from First Alabama Bank after a long and rewarding career working with many good friends.

Mary and Harris were faithful members of Southside Baptist Church attending over sixty years. She loved her church family and had many lifelong friendships.  

Mary loved reading, quilting, and spending time with her family.  Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Harris, in 2014.  Survived family members include four sons: Charles and wife Loretta, Mickey and wife Lana, David and wife Charlotte, and Steve and wife Cindy.  Grandchildren are Tracy Blanchard and husband Tony, Ashley Newton and husband Patrick, Chris Grimes and wife Ginger, Alex Grimes and wife Daniela, and Taylor Grimes and husband John Bell. Her great-grandchildren are Katherine and Bennett Blanchard, Alyssa and Kendall Newton and Harris and Griffin Grimes.
