Beloved brother and son, Matthew Adam Thomas (Captain, United States Army), a resident of Ozark, Alabama, died of a sudden unexpected illness while stationed at Fort Carroll, South Korea, Thursday, June 29, 2023. He was 34.


            A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023 at 10:00 A.M., at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Ozark. Father Chris Boutin will officiate. Graveside services, with full military honors, will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark will oversee arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Friday, August 11th at the funeral home.


            Captain Thomas earned a Bachelor of Science from Auburn University at Montgomery in 2011. He was commissioned as an Armor Officer in the United States Army on June 1, 2011. He transitioned to an Adjutant General Officer in 2014. Captain Thomas served in numerous positions during his 12-year Army Career. He served a distinguished combat tour as Platoon Leader, C Troop 8th Squadron, 1st Calvary Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, in Afghanistan. Subsequently, he was competitively selected to command Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), 1st Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, Fort Wainwright, Alaska. His last position was as the Human Resource Officer, 498th CSSB, 19th ESC, Camp Walker, South Korea.


            Captain Thomas’s military decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters (OLC), Army Achievement Medal with two OLC, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism, Korean Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon.


            He was preceded in death by his father Rodney, mother Jenelle and brother Steven Thomas.


            He is survived by his three sisters, Mona Warren and husband, SFC U.S. Army Andrew Warren, Ozark, AL; Michelle Holland and husband, Danny Holland, Enterprise, AL; Holly Johnson and husband, Damon Johnson, Enterprise, AL; four brothers, Dr. Michael Thomas and wife, Lara Thomas, Stratham, NH; Christopher Thomas (LTC, U.S Army, Retired) and wife, Gina Thomas (LTC, U.S. Army, Retired) Colorado Springs, CO; Gregory Thomas and wife, Regan Thomas, Shelby Township, MI; John Thomas and wife, Jessica Thomas Tampa, FL; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
