BERTHA COMMUNITY…Mattie Lois “Peggy” Barefield Snell, a lifelong resident of the Bertha Community of Dale County, died Thursday afternoon, July 30, 2020, in the Ozark Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 88.

     Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 2, 2020, in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery, in the Bertha Community, with Reverend Jud Waldrop and Reverend Bill Hart officiating. Face masks and social distancing will be observed. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:45 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary.

     Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, 4239 County Road 69, Skipperville, AL 36374.

     Mrs. Snell was born and reared in the Bertha Community of Dale County, daughter of the late Dempsey Dowdy Barefield and Mattie Vinny Covington Barefield.  She retired as a Clerk Typist from the Dale County Department of Pensions and Security. Mrs. Snell was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church where she enjoyed teaching vacation bible school and singing in the church choir. She had a special love for her cat “Harry”. Mrs. Snell was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh Thurston Snell, and seven brothers.

     Surviving relatives include two sons, Leslie Grant Snell (Pamula), Gadsden, AL; and Gregory Allen Snell (Glenda), Daviston, AL; five grandchildren, Jason Branch (Shana), Jeffrey Branch (Lindsay), Jarrett Branch, Fred Randall Martin, Jr. (Sherree), John Garrick Martin (Melissa); seven great-grandchildren.

     Serving as active pallbearers will be Roger Barefield, Chuck Barefield, Brent Barefield, Dempsey Barefield, Jason Branch, Jeffrey Branch, Jarrett Branch and Jon Barefield.

     The family would like to express their appreciation to all those who gave special care and love to Mrs. Snell.
