HEADLAND. . .Maureen DeShazo Nowell, a resident of Headland, passed away Monday morning, December 18, 2023, at her home. She was 97.


            Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, December 21, 2023, in Gardens of Memory, between Headland & Dothan, with Reverend Scotty Scott officiating. The family will receive friends following the graveside service. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, c/o Bill Ridlehoove, 1550 Parramore Road, Dothan, AL 36303.


            Mrs. Nowell was born and reared in the Tumbleton Community of Henry County, daughter of the late Monroe DeShazo and Noma Ruth Gamble DeShazo. She lived near Headland all her lifetime. Mrs. Nowell was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening and was a member of Camellia Garden Club of Dothan for many years and won several awards with her floral designs. She was preceded in death by her husband, Durwood Nowell, a daughter, Starla Nowell Schroll, and two sons, Kenny Nowell and Ronny Nowell, and a sister, Martha Mitchell.


            Surviving relatives include two sons, Dr. Danny Nowell and Benny Nowell (Cynthia); a sister, Jimmie Ditty, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
