Mavis F. Calhoun

Mavis Florence Powell Calhoun died peacefully Wednesday, April 1, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. She was 84.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015 at Taylor Assembly of God with Rev. Eddie Littlefield officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time Saturday at the church.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Friends of Wesley Manor, c/o Wesley Manor, 718 Honeysuckle Road, Dothan, AL 36305.

Mrs. Calhoun was born December 13, 1930 to Lonnie and Julia Powell. She was married to the late John Glyn Calhoun for over 55 years. Mrs. Calhoun owned and operated The Dressmaker Shop for over 40 years before retirement. She was a member of Taylor Assembly of God.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Gene Calhoun; a daughter, Dilene Calhoun; her parents, four brothers and one sister.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Ray Calhoun (Patricia), Marty Calhoun (Twila), and Lavanda Calhoun; grandchildren, Jeff Calhoun (Donna), Mike Calhoun (Misty), John Calhoun (Amanda), Matt Calhoun (Amy), Jacey Cox (Josh), Celeste Slater (Kareem), and Kent Calhoun (Brittany); 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Arthur Powell; sister, Evelyn Cobb (Roy); and sisters-in-law, Vassie Watkins, Martha Jean Powell, Wanda Jo Calhoun, and Carolyn Calhoun.

Mrs. Calhoun’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family would like to thank her Wesley Manor family (staff) for the love and care shown to her and our family over the past nine plus years.
