Mrs. Mavis Tidwell Mathews of Enterprise passed away Thursday, November 3, 2022. She was 78.                   

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 6, 2022, at Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Enterprise with Chaplain Charles Goldsmith officiating.  Burial will follow in Meadowlawn Cemetery in Enterprise with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 1 p.m. continuing until the time of service. 

Mrs. Mathews was born August 23, 1944, in Dozier, Alabama, to the late Noah and Alzie Carpenter Tidwell.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Kathy Mathews; sisters, Faye Owens and Joan Hall; and brothers, Edward Tidwell and Grover Tidwell.  At the age of 4, Mrs. Mathews was stricken with polio, but she overcame the odds and went on to live a full life.  She enjoyed a career with Civil Service for over 18 years, and built a home that was full of joy and love for her children and grandchildren.  Among many talents, she was a gifted songwriter, musician, and a great Pinochle player. 

She is survived by her husband, Wesley C. Mathews; children, Bobby Mathews (Misty) of Hoover, Alabama, Darlene Mathews Mock of Enterprise, and Jeffrey “John” Mathews (Wanda) of Elba; sister, Irene Tidwell Hodge of Jack, Alabama; grandchildren, Rusty Barefoot (Karen), Noah Mathews, and Spenser Mathews; and great-grandson, Seth Barefoot.  Mrs. Mathews loved and was loved by many members of her extended family. 

The family would like to thank Kindred Hospice, as well as private caregivers, Kadejia, Christianna, and Michelle for their loving care.
