Date of Service: Graveside service with military honors will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Van Cooley officiating. Visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home prior to the service.

Melvin Barnette Henderson, a resident of Cottonwood, passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2019. He was 77.


Graveside service with military honors will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Vann Cooley officiating. Visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home prior to the service.


Mr. Henderson was born on November 1, 1942 to the late Robert and Essie Henderson in Greenwood, South Carolina and lived there the early years of his life. Soon after his graduation, he joined the US Navy and served from 1961 to 1968. Mr. Henderson was a veteran of the Vietnam war and served on the USS America and the USS Independence. He graduated from Lander University in 1973 where he received his B.S. in Business Administration. Melvin worked for Michelin Tire Company for 17 years until he retired then he moved to Alabama in 2005. He was a diehard Clemson Tigers fan.


He was preceded in death by the mother of his sons, Judith P Henderson; his siblings, JW (Betty) Henderson, Haskill (Tate) Henderson, Charles (Evelyn) Henderson, Helen (Andis) Smith, and Marie Henderson; and his great-grandson, Finley Jacob Lynch.


Survivors include his wife of 38 years Julie Ann Henderson; his four sons, Ret. Captain Kevin (Sherri) Henderson of Chesapeake VA., Todd (Kathy) Henderson of Huntsville AL, Derrik (Shawnna) Henderson of Travelers Rest, and Mike (Stephanie) Harris of Lexington SC; three grandsons, Lt. Commander Select Chaz (Kathy) Henderson, Matthew (Abigail) Harris, and Zachery Gregson; three granddaughters, Bailey (Jimmy) Lynch, Emily Harris, Alliegh Gregson. his brother, Robert E Henderson; his three sisters, Shirley Williams, Betty (Sam) McNeely, and Margret (Byron) Vaigneur; several nieces and nephews.
