Mr. Ai Hammond of Hartford passed away Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at the family residence.  He was 89.

Memorial services with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 24, 2012, in Sorrells Funeral Home Chapel with an Army Chaplain officiating and with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that memorials be made to Gentiva Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL  36303.  

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 1:00 until service time. 

Mr. Hammond was born on April 30, 1922 in Denmark, Wisconsin to the late Ira and Carrie Hammond.  He retired from the U.S. Army after 30 years of service, which included WW II, Korea and Vietnam.  His parents, two grandchildren:  Marcie Mills and Lisa Miller, as well as several brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Mock Hammond of Hartford; one son:  Gene Hammond (Jackie) of Vermont); two daughters:  Martha Whitrock (Tom), Linda Miller both of Malvern; stepdaughter:  Teresa Kelly (Patrick) of Slocomb; three stepsons:  Ricky Newsome (Jackie) Paul Newsome both of Enterprise, Edward Osborne (Casey) of Dothan; one sister:  Vi Davis (Herb) of Montana; six grandchildren:  Jenny Hammond of California, Mark Hammond of Vermont, Renae Nelson of Rehobeth, Amanda Harris of Slocomb, Anthony Miller of Panama City, Carrie Davis of Hartford; eleven great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

“The greatest gift we ever had was a gift from God and we call him Dad.”
