Surrounded by his loving family, Edwin Hughes Whitehead of Dothan passed on to his Heavenly home on August 13, 2022. He was 87 years old.

Edwin was born on September 28, 1934, in Cottonwood, Alabama, to Foy and Blonnie Whitehead and was their middle son to two siblings. He was a graduate of Cottonwood High School where he played the trumpet in the band. While in high school he met the love of his life, Martha Gail Dawsey, and they were married on July 11, 1954.

He served for a short time in the Air National Guard, and after his time in the guard, he was a manager at B.C. Moore and Sons in Geneva, Alabama. In 1961, he and his brother, Bruce, became the owners of Wilson’s Mens Shop in downtown Dothan. For 38 years they outfitted many men in the Wiregrass area. He was also active in the Dothan Downtown Group.

Edwin was a devoted member of the First Baptist Church of Dothan, Alabama. For many years he sang in the choir, served as a deacon, and was involved in many other church operations. Edwin was known for his servant’s heart and was always willing to lend a hand to his family and friends.

Edwin is preceded in death by his brother, Foy Bruce Whitehead.

Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Martha Gail Whitehead; his daughter, Tammy (Keith) Peterman of Dothan, Alabama; his son, Michael (Tara) Whitehead of Boynton Beach, Florida; his sister, Barbara Arnold of Enterprise, Alabama; his precious grandchildren: Spencer (Whitney) Sanders, Amanda (Bryan) Stewart, Brittan (Kirk) Jones, Alexa Whitehead, Kelsey Whitehead, and Slater Whitehead; and his precious great-grandchildren: Ava, Emma, Bennett, Finn, and Evelyn Sanders; Bryson, Hudson, and Mason Stewart; and Henry and Charlotte Jones; also several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on August 17, 2022, at First Baptist Church in Dothan with Taylor Rutland and Bob Gross officiating. The family will receive friends at the church before the service from 10 - 11 a.m. A graveside service will follow at Memory Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, 300 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301 or to the Wiregrass Area Food Bank, 382 Twitchell Rd, Dothan, AL 36303.

Serving as pallbearers will be Keith Peterman, Spencer Sanders, Slater Whitehead, Bryson Stewart, Kirk Jones, and Jim Adams.

The family requests that all Covid guidelines be followed.
