Mr. Emory Max Davis, age 90, of Dothan, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 30, 2022.


Max was born February 21, 1932 in the Good Hope Community of Pike County, Alabama to the late Morris Dewey Davis and Addie Bell Meadows Davis. Max graduated from Goshen High School in 1951. After graduation, Max worked with Superior Moulding in Troy. He was drafted into the United States Army (1954). Max completed Basic Training at Camp Rucker and was shipped to New York City where he completed his military service.


Returning to Troy after serving in the Army, Max enrolled at Troy State Teachers College and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Education. He worked as a high school teacher until he was led to work with the State of Alabama. Max also served as an Adult Basic Education Teacher and taught many to read and write. During his 34-year tenure with the State Employment Service, Max served as an employment interviewer, employment counselor, employment security specialist, and manpower planning specialist for seven counties in Alabama. In 1985, he was recognized as the Employee of the Year from the Alabama State Employees Association – Houston County Chapter. Max worked his way to the position of Manager of the Dothan Employment Service Office, where he served for 15 years until his retirement.


Max served as President of the Alabama Retired State Employees Association (2002-03), was a member of the Dothan Planning and Zoning Commission, and a member of the Civitan Club. In 2003, Max was inducted into the Alabama Senior Citizen Hall of Fame. He has received honors and awards of merit from many groups and associations including Outstanding Individual of the Year from the Dothan Area Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, the Distinguished Service Award from the Civitan Club, the American Business Women’s Association, and the American Legion. Max was recognized as an Honorary Lieutenant Colonel Aide-de-Camp in the Alabama State Militia (1972). He was also a member of the Leadership Dothan Class of 1986. Max was a longtime member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Social Committee Chairman for the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Troy University Alumni Association.  


In his spare time, Max enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid Alabama Crimson Tide fan.


In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Mary Joyce Williamson Davis; his brother, Morris Dewey Davis, Jr.; and an infant sister, Roslie Davis. He is survived by his children, Patsy Davis and Greg Davis (Christina Johnson); his sister-in-law, Josephine Davis; nieces, Debbie Fortune (Dale), Judy Blackmon (Jimmie), and Marsha Chamlies (Charles); numerous other relatives and friends.


The family would like to say a special thank you to Rhonda Clark, Judy Strickland and the staff of Kindred Hospice and Hartford Health Care for being wonderful caregivers to our father. Dr. Ivan Douglas Jackson and his staff for their compassionate care. A special acknowledgment to family friends Lynne and Jennifer Jordan for their love and friendship.


Funeral services will be held at 1 PM, Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Tim Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 12 PM until 1 PM, prior to the service at the funeral home.
