Mr. Harry B. New, Sr. of Dothan passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at the Henry County Health and Rehab. He was 84.


Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, at the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Robert Oates and Reverend Robert Baxter officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery in Hartford with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.


The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 A.M. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the First Presbyterian Church 3012 West Main St., Dothan, AL 36305, or to the Alzheimer’s Resource Center 1314 Westgate Parkway, Suite 2, Dothan, AL 30303.


Mr. New was born October 20, 1927, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the son of the late Benjamin Elijah New and Leila Mae Marlar New. Mr. New was raised in Tuscaloosa, and attended Howard College (Samford University) on a pharmaceutical scholarship at the age of 16. He then served a tour with the Navy, afterward returning to the college and graduated with a degree in pharmacy. Following graduation he was hired by E.R. Squibb and Sons as a regional sales representative. His territory included Dothan which he then chose to make his home. Mr. New later became an active partner in City Drug where he was able to better use his Pharmacy skills. In 1967, he went on to co-own and operate Medical Arts Pharmacy where he worked until retirement in 1991. Mr. New had many hobbies and outside interests, but his love for Pharmacy and helping people encourage him to continue working part-time at Northcutt’s Pharmacy until 2004 when he finally accepted full retirement.


Mr. New is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Nina Sue Smith New of Dothan, a daughter, Marie New Gunderman (Sam) of Yorktown, Virginia, two sons, Harry B. New of USVI and Michael B. New (Robbie) of Dothan, two grandchildren, Bonnie Marie Bridges, Yorktown, Virginia, James Benjamin New, Tulsa, Oklahoma, three step-children, Elizabeth Sauls, San Antonio, Texas, Robert Dowling (Tammy), Hartford, Alabama, Suanne Kornegay (Glen), Fairhope, Alabama, step-grandchildren, Ryan, Lauren, Rachel, Claeb and Cameron, two brothers, Robert E. New (Sallie), Orlando, Florida, and William C. New (Margaret) Tuscaloosa, Alabama, five nieces and nephews.


 


Pallbearers will be Philip Atkinson, Larry Bond, David Hogg, Daniel Hogg, Lee Brennan, and Bruce Hall.


 


The family would like to thank Covenant Hospice and Henry County Health and Rehabilitation Facility for their care and support during their time of need.
