Mr. James A. Hicks of Slocomb passed away Monday, July 30, 2012 at Signature Health Care.  He was 84.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2012 in First Baptist Church in Slocomb with Rev. Ennis Hyman and Rev. Scott Byrd officiating.  Burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.  Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church or the Slocomb Rescue Squad.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. 

Mr. Hicks was born on April 17, 1928 in Akron, OH to the late Charlie Frank and Lillie Ponds Hicks.  He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  He served his country proudly and retired from the U.S. Navy in 1955.  Mr. Hicks is known throughout the area for the loyal and devoted service rendered with the Geneva County Sheriff Department from 1980 until his retirement in 1990.  He also served many years as a Slocomb Police Officer and later as Slocomb Police Chief.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Rev. John Hicks and Bill Hicks.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Myrtle Hicks of Slocomb; two daughters:  Terri Hicks Redding of Slocomb, Celena Day (Robert) of LaGrange, GA; two sons:  Henley (Lisa) Hicks of Slocomb, Brian Hicks of Daytona Beach, FL; one sister:  Gayle Scott of Auburn; two brothers:  Robert L. Hicks of Graceville and Kenneth Hicks of Elba; a very special aunt:  Donnette Peacock; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; several nieces and nephews.



The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Signature Health Care as well as Covenant Hospice for the care and devotion shown to Mr. Hicks and his family during his illness.
