SKIPPERVILLE…  Mr. Jim Overton died Sunday evening, August 6, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.  He was 85.

His Celebration of Life services, with military honors, will be held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, August 11, 2023, in the Ridgecrest Baptist Church with Reverend Bill Weed officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home of Ozark is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Dale Baptist Association Food Pantry, 4151 Andrews Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360.

Jim was born on August 21, 1937, to Vester Overton and Audie Hudson in Fayette County, Alabama.  He graduated from Irwin County High School in Ocilla, Georgia.  He began a thirty-five-year career with GTE, taking a break only to serve his country in the US Army.  After his retirement he began his second career with The City of Ozark of twenty plus years, first as manager of the Ozark Civic Center and later working in the bait store at Ed Lisenby Lake where he met and developed many wonderful friends who enjoyed gathering for morning coffee and catching up on local news.

There are many things that could be said about Jim Overton; his impeccable honesty and loyalty, his willingness to help others and his joy which filled a room.  The one best word to describe Jim is his love, love for Jesus, love for family, love for fishing, hunting and all things outdoors and his love for Southern Gospel Music.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Elizabeth, brother-in-law, Ray Whitworth.

He is survived by his wife, Lynn, one sister, Jean Whitworth, Jackson, Georgia; three daughters, Patricia Hybholt (Chris) Gig Harbor, WA, Sandy Woodham (Larry), Ozark, and Lesa Outlaw (Eddie); Rocky Head; two sons, Mark Nemish (Kristen) Albuquerque, New Mexico, Don Overton (Lauren), Little Rock, Arkansas.  He enjoyed six grandsons and three granddaughters and was anxiously awaiting the arrival of twin great-grandsons, Malachai and Maverick. He is also survived by nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.  He was also blessed to love and be loved by very special neighbors and friends, Robert and Ranee Royal.

Honorary Pallbearers will be his grandsons: Michael Outlaw, Luke Outlaw, Aaron Strickland and Brandt Strickland.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Gentiva Hospice for their loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Overton and his family during his illness.
