Mr. Johnnie Asa Henderson, known affectionately as Johnnie to his many friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on February 6, 2024, at the age of 92, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on January 16, 1932, in Florala, Alabama, Johnnie was the cherished son of the late Asa and Katherine McDuffie Henderson. He lived a rich and fulfilling life surrounded by family, friends, and the many pursuits he loved.

Johnnie's life was one marked by devotion and love. He was blessed with a beautiful family, having married his high school sweetheart, Helen Wilhite Henderson in 1951, with whom he shared a remarkable 73 years of marriage. Together, they raised a family that included sons Steve (Donna) Henderson and Mike (Brenda) Henderson, and a daughter, Michele Henderson Preston. Johnnie took great joy in his role as a grandfather to Kelli Beaty, Chase Henderson, Katherine E. Henderson, Rachael H. Vaughn, and Jon Riley Preston, and was overjoyed to become a great-grandfather to Henry Asa Vaughn.

Along with his parents Johnnie is preceded in death by 2 sisters Shirley Brackin and Bobbie Jackson.

Johnnie's sense of duty and service to his country was evident through his membership in the National Guard 31st Dixie Division stationed at Ft. Jackson, SC, and his valiant service during the Korean War. His work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly when, in 1960, he and his father owned and operated Southside Auto & Truck. His business acumen further flourished when he took ownership of Dothan Radiator in 1974, and later established Ace Automotive Service in 1981.

Beyond his family and work, Johnnie had a passionate involvement in stock car racing, a love that led him to build the Rocket Speedway in Dothan in 1970. He was an avid racer himself, driving micromidgets to numerous victories and thrilling countless fans. His adventurous spirit didn't stop at the racetrack; Johnnie also took to the skies, earning his pilot's license and skillfully flying Cessnas.

An active member of the Southside Baptist Church in Dothan, Johnnie's faith was a cornerstone of his life, providing him with strength and guiding him in his service to others. His involvement in his church and community was a testament to his commitment to living a life of purpose and meaning.

Johnnie's love for nature was reflected in his fondness for fishing, an activity that offered him both solace and excitement. He found peace on the water, and it was there that he shared some of his most cherished moments with family and friends.

In every aspect of his life, Johnnie was known for his kindness, integrity, and the warmth of his smile. His presence was a source of stability and inspiration, and his legacy will live on through the lives of those he touched. Though he will be deeply missed, the memories he created will forever be treasured by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, great-grandson, and all who knew him.

Johnnie Asa Henderson's life was a journey well-traveled, filled with love, laughter, and the pursuit of passions that brought joy to himself and those around him. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest and a spirit that will continue to soar.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Reverend Stacy Stafford and Reverend Travis Free officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 1 PM until 2 PM, Saturday, February 10, 2024 prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as active pallbearers will be Jon Riley Preston, Allen Brackin, Jack Jackson, Craig Hughes, Derick Deese, and Roger Stokes.

Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
