James Loyd Jones, a resident of Cottonwood, died Friday, February 24, 2012 at his residence. He was 95.


Funeral services for Mr. Jones will be held at 11 AM Monday, February 27, 2012 at Howard Grove Freewill Baptist Church with Dr. Austin Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:45 AM prior to the service.


Mr. Jones was born May 29, 1916 in Houston County to the late Jean Sheppard and Lena Rhodes Jones. He joined the United States Army and served during World War II  and also received three battle stars for the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of the Rhineland and the Battle for Central Germany.  Mr. Jones then transferred to the United States Air Force and retired as a Senior Master Sergeant. He was a faithful member of Howard’s Grove Freewill Baptist Church serving as a Deacon and Song Leader.  Mr. Jones also was an avid writer of poetry, collector of antique cars and enjoyed playing the guitar. His most remarkable achievement was that of a loving husband, father and grandfather.


Survivors include his wife, Bettie Jones, Cottonwood; daughter and son in law, Helen and Grady Lowery, Lufkin, TX; son, James Loyd Jones, Jr., Ft. Myers, FL; grandchildren, Kinsey Jones and Grayson Jones; sister, Ann Ferguson, Terrell, TX and several nieces and nephews.
