Obituary: Mr. Monroe Jones

 

Mr. Monroe Jones of Newton passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2024. At the end of 95 years of loyal service, hard work, and good living, Monroe died in the care of his family and the staff at Flowers Hospital. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, February 17, 2024 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb with Rev. Buddy Hood officiating. Burial will follow in the Pilgrim Home Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continuing until service time.

Monroe was born January 20, 1929 in Spotsylvania, Virginia, where the modest lives of his mother, Meretta Chewning Jones and father, Stanley Jones, were not greatly impacted nine months later by the Wall Street crash of ’29.  Three years later, Monroe and his sisters, Ann and Lorene, were in an automobile crash that took their father’s life. In his early teens, Monroe started his mornings at a nearby dairy, milking cows before sunrise and then walking to school. That all changed when Monroe was old enough to be behind the wheel of his first car, flying through the streets of Fredericksburg, Virginia until he enlisted in the United States Army. Monroe’s love of cars and working on anything with a motor led him to his Army vocation as a mechanic for the UH-1B helicopter. Off duty at Ft. Rucker, Alabama, he met Linda Turner, who in 1961, became his wife, Linda Turner Jones. Later, on overseas assignment in Germany, Monroe and Linda became parents to their son, Robert Jones. After retirement from the army, Monroe and Linda settled in Wicksburg, living there for over fifty years. Monroe worked as Olympia Spa and Golf’s first golf cart mechanic for over twenty years and later drove the courtesy van for Solomon Chevrolet. 

In addition to his parents, two sisters: Ann M. Jones, and Lorene Jones Marshall preceded him in death. 

Survivors include his wife, Linda Turner Jones; son, Robert Jones and daughter-in-law, Angela Wallace; grandchildren: Savannah Jones, Sydney Jones, and Wyatt Jones; other extended family and friends.
