Roy Eugene “Gene” Johnson, age 87, of Dothan, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021.


Gene was born September 7, 1933 in Webb and served his country in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant and NCOIC Material Controller. During his 22 years of service, he served under five Commander-In-Chiefs. He also served in the Vietnam War and served 14 years of his military career in charge of the Presidential Squadron of Aircraft in Washington, D. C. After military retirement, he served as manager of the Dothan Elks Lodge.


Gene is preceded in death by his mother, Katie Nell Davis Pitts; his step-father, G. W. Pitts; his wife of 50 years, Norma Jean Smith Johnson; his son, Kenneth Duane Johnson; and his brother, Billy Joe Pitts.


He is survived by his sister, Barbara Everett and brother-in-law, former Congressman R. Terry Everett; his best friend and companion, Agnes Karvonen; nieces, Sherry Cuches and Jody Smith; several other relatives and friends.


Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, January 30, 2021 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home with Alabama Supreme Court Justice Tommy Bryan and National Director of Medicaid for Eisai Pharmaceuticals Bobby White officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10 AM until 11 AM, prior to the service.
