Mr. Shirley Hornsby of Samson, AL passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2023. He was 89 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home in Geneva with the Rev. Elbert Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Mr. Hornsby was born in the Marl Community of Geneva County, AL on January 24, 1934, to the late Chester Clemmons and Cordie Dell Byrd Hornsby. He was the youngest of nine children. Mr. Hornsby served his country nobly in the United States Army where he served in the Korean War. He worked and retired from Clinton Mills in Geneva after 44 years. Later in life he enjoyed going to the Samson Senior Citizens Center playing dominoes. For several years, he faithfully served as the Center’s bus driver. He was a proud member of New Prospect Baptist Church. Mr. Hornsby will be remembered by his family as a loving and devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his granddaughter, Rebekah Hornsby; five brothers, Horton, Cecil, David “Dink”, Collis, and Louie Hornsby; three sisters, Eva Marsh, Dora McIntosh and Mildred Brannon.
He is survived by one daughter, Ramona Yarbrough of Newton, AL; three sons, Steve Hornsby (Debi) of Ashford, AL, Wyman Hornsby (Dianne) of Geneva, AL, and Jeff Hornsby (Stephanie) of Oxford, AL; grandchildren, Justin Yarbrough, Stephen Hornsby, Bailey Hornsby, Beckett Hornsby, Trevor Hornsby, Jared Hornsby, Kyle Catt, Rozalind Standing, Kash Hornsby, and Jonathan Smith; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Bobby Lane Davis for his dedicated assistance to our Dad during his later years, as well as, Bonifay Health and Rehab center for their love and care given to our Dad during his last few months
