Anita Schonberger Keel, age 61 died after a courageous battle with cancer on May 1, 2019. Anita was born March 22,1958 in New York to Joe Schonberger and Lisa Max Feldman. Anita earned an undergraduate degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Cornell University in 1980.  In 1984 she graduated from the Washington College of Law at American University. After law school she worked as a legal aid in Maryland representing abused and neglected children. Anita moved to Florida in 1988 and served as legal aid in the Ft. Lauderdale area representing the elderly in their receipt of public assistance and social security benefits.  After employment with the Broward County Human Rights Commission investigating discrimination, Anita began working for Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in its internal Equal Opportunity Office. In 1996 she joined FAU’s legal staff and continued there in the capacity of Assistant General Counsel and later as Associate General Counsel until March, 2004 when she joined the University of West Florida (UWF) as an Associate General Counsel.  She served as UWF’s General Counsel from September 2005 through January 1, 2008. She closed her career serving as Deputy General Counsel at UWF.

Anita met the love of her life, Anthony Keel on April 26, 2013. After a whirlwind romance they were married on May 20, 2017 in Long Island, New York. Anthony and Anita spent many long days and nights working on their barn in Dothan, Alabama preparing for the next chapter of their lives together. Anita found it amazing to discover that she wasn’t a Yankee, but really a southern belle in disguise. She dreamed about opening a country store while Anthony labored on their farm in Alabama. She lavished in the lifestyle of simple living and simple pleasures. Anita and Anthony enjoyed cooking and baking together, and it wasn’t unusual to find the two of them in a bake-off contest. Anita traveled extensively, and if there was any place Anita loved to be with Anthony, it was in the mountains of Montana.

Throughout Anita’s life she loved unselfishly, sacrificed herself in the service of others, and lived in obedience to a transcendent truth. She was a foster mother to three daughters, Halie, Tiera and Haley and a Big Sister to Sugar Bear. As her friend, I knew her dreams, her secrets and her fears. Anita graciously allowed me into her deepest corner of her soul. She was honest, sincere and genuine. Anita always had positive thoughts and words of encouragement, and was offering comfort until her final days. True friends are the ones who never leave your heart, even if they leave your life for a while. Even after years apart, you pick up with them right where you left off, and even if they die they're never dead in your heart.

Anita is survived by her husband and best friend, Anthony Keel from Dothan Alabama. Mother Lisa Feldman and stepfather Chester from Boca Raton, Florida. Stepmother Gloria Schonberger from Long Island, New York. Brother Michael Schonberger and wife Tyler, nephew and nieces Jordan, Melissa and Samantha from Bayonne New Jersey. Brother Ira Schonberger from Las Vegas Nevada. Cousins Carolina, Amy, Marcia and Ann. Predecessor, loving father Joe Schonberger.

Funeral services for Anita Schonberger will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at 11 a.m. graveside at Memory Hill Cemetery in Dothan, AL under the direction of Ward Wilson Funeral Home.

The family will host an informal Celebration of Life in memory of Anita Sunday, May 5, 2019, 6-7 p.m. in the Argo Athletic Club. It is just a time to visit with Anita's family to share memories of her.
