Mrs. Annie Lake "Peggy" Williams Powell, a resident of Ozark, died Wednesday evening November 8, 2023 in Oakview Manor Nursing Facility. She was 93 years old.
Funeral services for Mrs. Powell will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, November 16, 2023, from Ozark First Assembly of God Church with Pastor Brian Presley and Reverend Greg Aman officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.
The family will receive friends in the church Thursday from 12:30 P.M. until service time. Flowers will be accepted.
Annie Lake Williams Powell, known throughout most of her life as “Peggy”, was born August 16, 1930 to the late Robert Allan Williams and Rosie Lee Chambers Williams, the 19th of 20 siblings, half-siblings and step-siblings. She grew up in the Isabella community in Chilton County and attended Isabella High School. She lived on a combined peach and cotton farm and as such learned the values of hard work and personal responsibility as a child. After high school her first job was as a telephone operator (“number please”) in the old telephone office in Clanton, Alabama. It was during this time that she met her late husband, Holton Lamar Powell, of Clanton upon his return from the Navy after World War II. Once married, they embarked on a series of husband and wife businesses that included a business where they made “stick candies” that they distributed to central Alabama, a small cafe that was located in downtown Clanton, a full laundry and dry cleaning business and, finally, into the business of owning a Dairy Queen, which was located in Ozark, Alabama.
In 1962 they moved to Ozark after the purchase of the Dairy Queen and that became the profession that they remained in for the remainder of her life.
She was mother to two sons, Dennis Powell and Philip Powell. She was a devout Baptist, having attended Liberty Hill Baptist while in Clanton and moving her letter to the Ozark Baptist Church where it remained until this day. She loved to fish, she loved to travel, as she and her husband were avid RV’ers, and she loved Alabama football. Most of all, she loved her grandchildren, being affectionately known as “Big Mom” by all.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Marianne Powell and Philip and Debbie Powell all of Ozark; grandchildren, Dr. Adam Powell (Cara), Dr. Austin Powell (Kari), Abbey Dunn (Dr. Clark Dunn), Philip Allen Powell, Jr., Hunter Powell (Michelle), Danika Powell (Jonathan Tharpe), and Spencer Powell (Makayla Gardner); great grandchildren, Emma Lake, Jackson, Mae, Mills, Hudson, Neely, Elizabeth, Anne Collins, Ella Swensen, Cal, Eve, Alice, Holton, Greer and Payne. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
