Mrs. Carrie Mae Retherford of Dothan died Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at the Southeast Alabama Medical Center. She was 88.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday, February 3, 2012, at the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Todd Thorpe officiating and Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing.

 

The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 10 to 11 A.M. Friday, February 3, 20212. Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the International Crisis Aid (ICS).

 

Mrs. Retherford was born August 23, 1923, in Marianna, FL, the daughter of the late Arthur Jefferson Nichols and Mary Tharp Nichols.

 

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Arvel Hilton Retherford and James Matthew Tanton, brother, AJ Nichols, two sisters, Leonia Nichols Peel, Lena Nichols Pettis, son, Kermit Tanton, step-sons, Marvette Retherford, Jerry Hilton Retherford, Frank Retherford, and step-daughters, Dorothy Keith, and Carol Moore.

 

Survivors include daughter, Sheila Shelley (Ben), step-son, Truman Tanton (Joyce), step-daughters, Myrtle Simmons, Charlotte Merritt (Jim), step-son, Arvel Hilton Retherford, Jr., special family, daughters-in-law, Pat Retherford, Pat Tanton,  many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and special friend, Lydia Caldwell.
