   Mrs. Janis Carr Gibson of Ariton AL, 79, passed away on August 5, 2023, after a five-year battle with cancer. She was 79 years old.


   Funeral services for Mrs. Gibson will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, August 10, 2023 from Ariton Baptist Church with Reverend Dave Walsh officiating. Interment will follow in Old Tabernacle Cemetery near New Brockton, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.


   The family will receive friends in the church Thursday from 9:30 A.M. until service time. Serving as pallbearers will be Will Gibson, Kaleb Gibson, Pat Snellings, Scott Galbraith, Tim Crawford and Stephen Miller.


   Janis was born on August 8, 1943, to Wesley and Ethelyn Carr in Enterprise Alabama. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Early Childhood Education from Troy State University in 1976 and then a Master’s Degree in the same field in 1978. In her career she ran a private kindergarten, was a teachers aid and then a long-time teacher at G.W. Long and Ariton Elementary Schools. Janis was married to Tim Gibson in 1960, and they were married for thirty-six years until his death. Janis was an active member of Ariton Baptist Church for over fifty years and loved the Church with all her heart and soul. Outside of Church, Janis loved her three grandchildren and spent as much time as she could with them in various activities, whether it was watching them in school events, sporting activities, or just playing with them and having fun. One thing above all else that defined Janis Gibson was her love and devotion to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.


   Janis is preceded in death by her mother and father, Wesley and Ethelyn Carr; her husband, Tim Gibson; her brother, Carlton Carr; her brothers-in-law, Quay Kyser, Bill Penny, Jack Jones and Windell Gibson; her sisters-in-law, Sue Ann Carr, Clara Jones, and Faye Heartsill; her nephew, Robert Penny, and her great nephew, Christopher Carr.


   Janis is survived by her sons, Ken Gibson (Kim) of Virginia Beach, VA, and Mark Gibson (Connie) of Eufaula, AL; her brothers and sisters, Mary Helen Penny of Valdosta, GA, Carol Jean Farlow (Jim) of Raleigh, NC, Joyce Warren (Roger) of Enterprise, AL, Sara Kyser of New Brockton, AL, Charles Carr (Lyn) of Hoover, AL; her sisters-in-law, Kathy Carr of Enterprise, AL and Gayla Kinney of Troy, AL; her brother-in-law, Lane Heartsell; and her grandchildren, Lauren Gibson Snellings (Pat) of Sandy Springs, GA, Will Gibson of Auburn, AL, and Kaleb Gibson of Virginia Beach, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and a very special friend of the family, Samantha Thompson of Ashford, AL.


   Before her death, Janis respectfully requested no flowers. She asked that memorials be made to Ariton Baptist Church, 157 Atlantic Road, Ariton, AL 36311; or a charity of your choice.
