Mrs. Nellie Jean “Jeanie” Whitehead of Geneva passed away on December 3, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.  She was 65.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at Maple Avenue Baptist Church with Rev. Nathan Carroll, Minister Harry Adkison and Dr. Mike Shirah officiating.  Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, December 5, 2011 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m.  Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the Jeanie Whitehead Scholarship Fund c/o Martha Helms, Citizens Bank, P.O. Box 190, Geneva, AL 36340.


Mrs. Whitehead was born in Enterprise, AL on August 27, 1946 to the late Bill and Clara Farmer.  She graduated from Geneva High School, Class of 1964 and received a B.S. degree from Troy State University.  She taught for many years with Geneva City Schools modeling love and kindness to numerous students.  She taught K-1-2-3 at Mulkey Elementary School.  She was a catalyst in making children’s lives richer and more meaningful.  Mrs. Whitehead worked many years at Wiregrass Medical Center lab, and with Pensions and Securities.


 She was a very active member of the community.  She was instrumental in organizing the Geneva Junior Service League.  She was a past member of the Geneva Woman’s Club and was chosen Woman of the Year.  Mrs. Whitehead was teacher of the year at Mulkey Elementary as well as Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year.  She was an active member of the Athenaeum Club and served as former vice president and president.


 She leaves behind her husband, Earl Whitehead; two daughters, Leah Brinley (Keith) and Anna Whitehead (Scott Lolley); granddaughter, Nelly Leannah Brinley (Josh Windham), all of Geneva; two sisters, Jan Mesa (Tom) of Miami and Gail (H.G.) Hayes of Geneva; brother-in-law, Gerald Whitehead (Diane) of Geneva; two nieces, Stevi Sims (Roy) of Birmingham and Leisa Sconiers (Dale) of Westville; two nephews, Jim Turner (Amanda) of Dothan and Chris Whitehead (Natasha) of Geneva; and many other extended family and close friends.  The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Dale Mitchum and Dr. John Simmons.  We are deeply grateful for the kindness shown by the employees of Wiregrass Medical Center.
