Mrs. Mary Ann Sanders Hornsby of Dothan, AL passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 26, 2023, surrounded by her family the day after her 92nd birthday.


Mary Ann was born in Dothan, AL on September 25, 1931, to the late Alberta Steagall Sanders and Joe Sanders, Sr. Mary Ann was a graduate of Dothan High School and attended the University of Alabama. Mary Ann was a devoted wife, avid gardener, and great cook. She adored her role as a homemaker raising five children in Geneva, AL. Her greatest pleasure was sitting on the porch at Crystal Lake watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in her death by her husband, Don Michael Hornsby, Sr.; her parents Joe Sanders, Sr. and Alberta Steagall Sanders; brother, Joe Sanders, Jr.; brother-in-law, Joseph Hornsby, III; sister-in-law, Sue Hornsby Albright; grandson (Phillip Hornsby).


She is survived by her children, Cathy Orr (Bob), Leigh Lang (Tom), Mike Hornsby (Lynette), Joe Hornsby (Lisa), and Jean Mims (Anthony); sister, Catherine Sanders Bryan; grandchildren, Caroline Orr, Robert Lang (Ashley), Richard Lang (Paige), Mary Summerall (Rob), Michael Hornsby, Melissa Hornsby, Alex Windham (Hunter), Anna Hornsby, Karen Supple, Joe Hornsby, Jr. (Shannon), Amanda Vega (Justin), Mollie Ashness (Paul), Austin Mims (Lizzie), Sydney Reeder (Colby). She is also survived by a multitude of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.


The family would like to extend a special thank you to Betty, her special caregiver at home, and to the loving staff at Extendicare and Gentiva.


A graveside funeral service to celebrate her life will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Ward Wilson Memory Hill in Dothan, AL with Rev. Randy Sellers officiating.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church in Geneva, or to the charity of one’s choice.
