Mary Jane Mann McArthur passed away peacefully at Extendicare in Dothan, on October 18, 2023. Born on May 22, 1935, in Miami, Florida and a longtime resident of Ashford, Alabama, Mary Jane was known for her loving nature, intelligence, and faith-filled life and was a loving and devoted matriarch who always put her family first.

Mary Jane was the daughter of the late John Espy and Willie Audrey Mann.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Collins McArthur, Jr., former mayor of Ashford, her brothers, John and Ed Mann, and a granddaughter, Mandy Emfinger.  She is survived by her only son, Earl Collins McArthur, III of Tallassee, granddaughter, Meghan (David) Bonifay of Tallassee, seven great-grandchildren, sisters Grace Adams and Ann (Gene) Williams, sisters-in-law Beverly Mann, Priscilla McArthur, and Rebecca McArthur Lee.

After graduating as Valedictorian of Ashford High School in 1953, Mary Jane attended Huntingdon College where she received a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and Microbiology.  She interned at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, a city she dearly loved and visited throughout her life. Employed by hospital labs in Montgomery, Tallassee, and Dothan, Mary Jane retired from Flowers Hospital where she dedicated many years of service.  Her intelligence and compassion were evident in her work, and she was highly respected by her colleagues.  After retirement, Mary Jane’s thirst for learning led her to pursue a degree in nursing, and to earn a real estate license. Mary Jane was a devout Christian and active in United Methodist churches in Montgomery, Tallassee, Ashford, and currently was a member of FUMC Dothan.  Her faith was a guiding force in her life and she found great joy in her church community. She was also a faithful member of the Ashford Study Club, the Lions Club Auxiliary, and a poll worker for the City of Ashford.

Mary Jane was an avid reader and enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, loved working in her garden, and was a passionate fan of college football and softball. She was also a gifted artist and musician. Mary Jane’s varied and diverse interests reflected her kindness and generosity, her love for life, and her dedication to serving others in her profession and her community.

In remembering Mary Jane as a beacon of light and wisdom, we celebrate a life well-lived and filled with love, service, and faith.  As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the joy and love she brought into our lives and her memory will be forever cherished by those who loved and knew her.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, November 16, 2023, at the  Ashford City Cemetery.
