Mrs. Rhonda Elaine Fortson Aplin, age 76, of Dothan, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2023 surrounded by her family.


Born on March 23, 1947, in Houston County, Alabama, Rhonda was a lifelong resident of the area and touched the lives of countless individuals with her generous, loving, and thoughtful spirit.

Rhonda was a dedicated and accomplished student, earning her Master’s Degree in English Arts from Troy University. Her love for literature and learning was evident throughout her life and Rhonda’s commitment to education extended beyond her own studies, as she served as a Senior Adult Sunday School teacher for over 40 years, guiding and inspiring those in their spiritual journeys.

Rhonda had a wide range of interests that brought joy to her life and those around her. She was an avid reader and enjoyed playing board games. Her talent for cooking was well-known, and she delighted in preparing delicious meals for her loved ones, creating lasting memories around the dinner table.

Rhonda’s green thumb was evident in her beautiful garden, which she tended with care and dedication. Her love for gardening and flowers brought color and life to her home and served as a testament to her nurturing spirit. Above all, Rhonda cherished her family and grandchildren, showering them with love and affection at every opportunity. Her unwavering devotion to her loved ones was a constant source of strength and inspiration for those fortunate enough to know her. Rhonda’s legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched during her time on earth.


Rhonda is preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Gladys Fortson; and her brother, Ronny Fortson.


She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lamar Aplin; her sons, Andrew (Brenda) Aplin and Steve (Alyson) Aplin; her grandsons, Ben and Bryant Aplin; her granddaughters, Claire and Claudia Aplin; her sister, Iris (Freddy) Williford; her brother, Bruce (Sharon) Fortson; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11 AM, Friday, June 2, 2023 at Bay Springs Baptist Church with Reverend Tommy Green officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM, Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Ward Wilson Funeral Home.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Ben Aplin, Bryant Aplin, Bert Woodham, Marty Snell, Freddy Williford, and Connor Saliba. Honorary pallbearers will be Judd Daughtry and Kevin Jackson.


Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to Bay Springs Baptist Church 1721 S Bay Springs Road, Dothan, AL  36305.
