Obituary from Holman Funeral Home and Cremations – Ozark, AL

“This establishment does not own a crematory.”

Mrs. Ruby Pearl Chalker Phillips, beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and Nannie, passed peacefully on August 31, 2020.  She was two months shy of her 97th birthday.  She was a resident of Ozark Health and Rehabilitation facility for the past 10 months.  Prior to this she lived in Ozark, Alabama where she raised her family.

Funeral services for Mrs. Phillips will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 3, 2020, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home and Cremations in Ozark with Reverend Phil Craddock officiating. Interment will follow in Asbury United Methodist Church Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Ozark Thursday morning from 10:00 A.M. until service time. Serving as pallbearers will be Andy Phillips, Richard Hardwick, Jeremy Bell, Steven Salter, Mark Phillips and Jeremy Woodham.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Coffee County, AL on October 25, 1923, to the late Jesse Ewell and Ruby Harden Chalker.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Howard (Jack) Phillips; her three brothers, Maxie, J.W., and John Amos Chalker; and infant great granddaughter, Alaina Pearl Hardwick.

Ruby and Jack were married for 47 years and had four children,  Helen (James H.) Laney, Headland, AL., Neal (Sandi) Phillips, Dothan, AL., Kenneth (Amy) Phillips, and Jackie (Cora) Phillips, Ozark, AL.

Mrs. Phillips was blessed with five grandchildren and three step grandchildren, Mark (Anne Katherine) Phillips, Lindsey (Steven) Salter, all of Dothan, AL., Andy (Stacey) Phillips, Echo, AL.,   Kristi (Jeremy) Bell, Dothan AL., Holly (Richard) Hardwick, Gloucester, VA.,  Jeremy Woodham, Enterprise, AL. Josh Woodham, Santa Rosa Beach FL. and Anna Johnson, Birmingham, AL.

She was even more blessed with her twelve great grandchildren, Powell and Ellary Phillips; Elle, Grady, and Reese Salter, all of Dothan AL.,  Katelyn, MaKayla, and Cody Phillips, Echo, AL.,  Haystin and Kenleigh Woods, and Brody Bell, Dothan AL., and Isabella Alaina Hardwick, Gloucester, VA.

Mrs. Phillips was a very talented quilter.  This was her love, other than providing for her family which always came first. It was not unusual to see a quilters frame set up in the living room of their house, with one of her beautiful hand pieced quilt tops stretched in it ready for those meticulous hand stitches.  She had on occasion won some blue ribbons and cash prizes for their beauty.

She also loved working in her yard and small vegetable garden.  She always managed to grow lovely flowers, blooming bushes, and vegetables of many kinds.  Another talent she had was making fried cornbread and homemade dumplings.

In her younger years, Mrs. Phillips kept children for working mothers.  Her love for home day-care brought many friends and family to her house daily.  She loved those kids and loved seeing them after they became adults.  Many of them still remember her and speak of her often.  She ended many years of day-care with caring for her last babies….her grandchildren.

Many special thanks go to Ozark Health and Rehabilitation facility, the nurses and CNA’s on Park Hall, Dr. Ryan Conner, Mary Ann Jay, Susan Kornegay, and a very special family friend, Linda Knott.  Also thanks to everyone who lifted her up in prayer during her extended illness with severe dementia.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation (Childhood Cancer Cure Research) 1333 South Mayflower Avenue, Suite 400 Monrovia, CA  91016- in honor of Isabella A. Hardwick.  They can also be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Ozark, P. O. Box 219  Ozark, AL 36361.
