Mrs. Sarie Grantham Ready, a resident of the Bertha Community in Dale County, went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday morning, July 17, 2022. She was 83 years old.

A memorial service for Mrs. Ready will be held 1:00 P. M. Wednesday, July 20, 2022, from New Hope Baptist Church with Reverend William Hart and Reverend Lee Windham officiating, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends in the church Wednesday from 12:00 P. M. until service time.

Sarie was born November 19, 1938 to the late William “Jerry” Grantham and Pearl Enfinger Grantham. She graduated from Ozark High School in Ozark, Alabama and attended the University of Montevallo. Sarie worked in the commissary at Ft. Rucker and later retired from the Finance and Accounting Division. While working at Ft. Rucker, a coworker introduced her to Jerry Ready, and on August 2, 1975 they were married. Incidentally, this coworker happened to be her future mother-in-law. Almost one year later the couple was blessed with their daughter. Sarie eventually accepted an early retirement from Civil Service so that she could stay at home and devote more time to her precious family.

In 1995, Mrs. Ready began an almost 30 year battle with breast cancer. She fought with determination and resiliency as her battle raged again in 2012 and finally 2019. During these years, Mrs. Ready demonstrated a warrior’s heart and an unwavering trust in her Lord Jesus, knowing He was carrying her through each battle. She commented often that Jesus daily walked with her, sat with her in her room, and watched over her, and now she is with Him. The battle is won! Her Shepherd blessed Sarie with His perfect mercy and grace, His unsurpassed peace and His unfailing love. Victory in Jesus.

At a young age, Sarie discovered her life-long passion for music and spent her time playing the piano as an expression of her God-given, creative gift. She played for many weddings where her music celebrated the love, commitment, and joy of the new couple. She played for many funerals where her music offered spiritual peace and emotional solace to grieving families. At New Hope Baptist Church, Sarie had led the choir for weekly meetings, special occasions, and contatas that people still remember to this day. She also played the piano at New Hope, as well as, Clopton United Methodist Church, Magnolia United Methodist Church, and Edwin United Methodist Church. Sarie also played for several Dothan Wiregrass Art League receptions held at the Wiregrass Museum of Art in loving support of her daughter’s artistic accomplishment. One of her greatest accomplishments in music and ministry included recording a CD, A Celebration of Hymns, in memory of Mrs. Annie Howard Peebles. The proceeds from this CD were donated to Breast Cancer Awareness. Sarie’s heartfelt desire was to glorify her Heavenly Father and provide a moment of worship and enjoyment to those who heard her play.

Sarie loved to travel anywhere and especially to the beach. She once planned a three-week vacation for her family and mother-in-law to go from Alabama to California and back again all in a conversion van. It included 21 states and many great adventures. There were many summers when she, her four sisters, and her daughter would go for a week to Ft. Walton. These five sisters, affectionately called “Pearl’s Girls” made an enduring impression on everyone they met. When Sarie was with you two things would happen – your life was filled with laughter and you made unforgettable memories.

The family is thankful for all the love, support, and prayers they have received over the last 3 and 1/2 years. The caring people at Dothan Hematology and Oncology and Dr. Patel’s office helped Sarie in her fight and in the process became friends and family. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Paola Bass and her nurse Denita Grice for their prayers and loving care of Sarie. Several people are special friends of Sarie and we thank them: Sally Covington, Edward and Gayle Rhodes, Alicia Snell, Vivia Peebles, Lonnie Battle, Jimmy and Shelia Searcy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Pearl Grantham; one sister, Peggy Doren (John) and two brothers, Jack Grantham (Faye) and Howard Grantham (Susie); one beloved niece, Wanda Grantham; nephews, Garry Grantham and Mark Quick.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, General C. “Jerry” Ready, III and one daughter, Gina L. Ready both of the Bertha Community; three sisters, Pat Walker (Estus) of Ozark, Sue Quick of Madison, FL, Bet Nabors of Jasper, AL; nieces, Beverly Sherer (Chris) of Jasper, AL, Betsy Blanton (Tony) of Madison, FL, Diane Drinkwater (Terry) of Bertha, Janet Cooper of Bertha, and Pam Winger (Paul) of Atlanta, GA; nephews, Wayne Grantham (Patty) of Athens, AL, Joe Grantham (Kathi) of Covington, GA, Jerry Grantham (Becky) of Headland, AL, Buddy Nabors of Mobile, AL, Charles Quick, Jr. (Ann) of Yellville, AR, Keith Quick (Camille) of Madison, FL, and Tim Walker (Marcia) of Birmingham, AL.

Sarie asked that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to help cover financial costs to:   Holman Funeral Home, 995 South Union Avenue, Ozark, Alabama 36360.
