Funeral services for Janet Gayle Mann will be held at Ward Wilson Funeral Home at 2 pm June 15, 2022. Visitation will be on Tuesday evening, June 14, from 6:00 -8:00pm.
On June 11, 2022 Gayle Mann went to be with her Lord and Savior, for whom she had patiently waited to see during her illness of the last several weeks. Before she drew her last breath she stated, “It is well with my soul. He has me in the palm of His hand.”
Gayle Mann was preceded in death by her parents, Fanchon and Clarence E. Hershey, Sr. and her son-in-law, Marvin R. Cox, Jr. She is survived by four children, Dawn Mann Cox; Doug Mann (Karen); Robin Pettis (Larry); and Paul Mann (Teresa); her brother, Ed Hershey, Topeka, KS; and sister, Susan Osgood (Jerry), Sunrise Beach, MO; 9 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She had many loves in her life. First and foremost was her love of God. This was evident in her forgiving spirit, even when deeply hurt. Demonstrating her commitment to Christ, she performed many acts of service. Among those were service at Henry Green Mission and South Lena Baptist Mission as pastor’s wife, Sunday School teacher, teacher in the kindergarten, and organist. She also served in the choir, as senior women’s Sunday School teacher, and many committees at Grandview Baptist Church.
She was a devoted mother, even while she worked as a full time nurse. She always had the time for each one of her children. She dearly loved each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild and her face would light up when any of these entered her home.
She was proud of her 30 years as a nurse at Southeast Alabama Medical Center, now Southeast Health. One of her major accomplishments was the establishment of the Wound Ostomy Program, in which she was able to help numerous people during a difficult time of their lives. She was also a volunteer there for 25 years after retirement.
She was an artist and craft person. She sewed and made clothes for her family. She learned to crochet from her grandmother at the young age of 9. She created many beautiful crocheted pieces for each of her family members. For many Christmases she took the time to do special craft projects with each of her grandchildren and had recently been teaching crocheting to some of them. She also enjoyed painting and ceramics.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Kindred Hospice and the special women who sat with her which allowed her to be at home, which was one of her last desires.
For each life she touched, she will be forever remembered.
