MURRAY  PHILLIPS 


HEADLAND. . .Murray Phillips, a resident of Headland, passed away, Saturday morning, April 12, 2014, at his home after an extended illness. He was 98.


            Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, April 13, 2014, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Matthew Mobley and Reverend Norman Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Grimes United Methodist Church, 404 Parramore Road, Dothan, AL 36303 or to a favorite charity.


            Mr. Phillips, affectionately known as “Hoss”, was born August 9, 1915 at his home in Headland to A. C. (Clant) Phillips and Mollie Hoffman Phillips. He was engaged in farming in Henry County his entire lifetime and dearly loved his family. Mr. Phillips was a faithful member of the Grimes United Methodist Church and served in various church activities and offices.


            Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by four sisters, Nell Armstrong, Nina Clyde Phillips, Inez Venable, and Irelle Stokes, three brothers, Frank Phillips, Russell (Hap) Phillips, and Radford (Cy) Phillips, a former son-in-law, Hart Powers, and a special cousin, Dick Phillips. 


            Surviving relatives include his wife of seventy-three years, Virginia Skipper Phillips, two daughters, Linda Phillips Brown (Roger), Kay Phillips Gamble (Jim), two sons, George Phillips (Eleanor), and Don Phillips (Kay), all of Headland; seven grandchildren, Eric Phillips (Margaret), Bill Phillips (Lynn), Matthew Phillips (Brook), David Gamble (Tommie), Daniel Powers (Ashley),  Melissa Gamble,  and Mark Phillips; nine great-grandchildren; six nieces and three nephews.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons and Thomas Kirkland.


            The family would like to express their appreciation to Sarah and Rachel of First Light Home Care and Gentiva Hospice for their loving care and kindness shown to Mr. Phillips during his illness.
