Myra Sue (Hawkins) Cruce, a resident of Wetumpka Alabama went into the comforting arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on October 02 2021.  Myra Sue was born November 19, 1934 in Jefferson County Alabama.  After graduation from high school she continued her education receiving a Bachelor’s of Science Degree from Alabama College -State College for Women (now the University of Montevallo) followed by a Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Alabama.  


There will be a visitation at Ward Wilson Funeral Home, Monday, October 4, 2021, one hour before the short (as per Myra Sue’s written directions to Allen and Richard) graveside service at Memory Hill Cemetery which will be held at 2 o’clock on, Monday, October 04, 2021.  Also as per Myra Sue’s written pre-death directions, which she repeated several times, she will not be in purple.


After marrying her first husband, Otis James (OJ) Hawkins, in 1958 she taught in Florida, where her two sons were born, then Georgia before the family moved to Dothan, Alabama in 1963.  Otis James started a successful self-owned business and Myra Sue had a 32-year teaching career with the majority of the time in the Houston County School System (Rehobeth High School) and Dothan City School System (Young Junior High School, Beverlye Middle School, Honeysuckle Middle School).  In addition to teaching thousands of children Science and Physical Education she was also the Cheerleading Sponsor and Girls’ Basketball Coach at the various schools.  She is a life time member of the National Teacher’s Association (NEA), Alabama Teacher’s Association (AEA), and Dothan Retired Teachers Association (DEA).  Myra Sue and Otis raised two wonderful boys during their 40 years of marriage which ended with Otis James’ death in 1998.  She was an active member of Cloverdale Baptist Church volunteering with hospital bound, elderly care, and teaching Sunday school.  


Myra Sue married her second husband, Bobby Earl Cruce in 2004, moving to Wetumpka, Alabama.   She and Bobby had attended high school together keeping in touch via reunions, of the 30 person class, over the years. Several years after the passing of her first husband they began dating and were married.   After her move to Wetumpka she became an active member of the Thorington Road Baptist Church.


Myra Sue was very proud that all four of her grandchildren were college graduates with Jennifer (Hawkins) Bryan earning a Master’s in Nursing,  Lauren Hawkins earning a Master’s in Systems Engineering, Matthew Hawkins earning Bachelor’s in Computer Science, and Lara (Hawkins) Green earning a Master’s in Visual Disabilities.


Myra Sue (Hawkins) Cruce is preceded in death by her parents, Wesley Richard  and Barbara Ellen Wooten, her brother Joseph Wooten, and her first husband Otis James Hawkins.   She is survived by her husband Bobby Earl Cruce and her son Allen Hawkins wife Camille their children Lauren Hawkins, Lara (Hawkins) Green and her husband Mark.   She is also survived by her favorite son Richard Hawkins (as she told Tracy at their wedding – but she also told Camille she was marrying her favorite son at her and Allen’s wedding) his wife Tracy their children Jennifer (Hawkins) Bryan her husband Blake and Matthew Hawkins.   Not to forget Sue had two wonderful great-grandchildren by Jennifer and Blake named Barrett and Becca.


The family would like to thank the workers which provided care, support, and companionship to their mother and Bobby since January.  Susie, Gracie, Melina, Mimi, and Kimberly of Right-at-Home/Montgomery from January to March then Ruby, Gloria, and Linda from April till her death.
