Myrlene Garrett Benton

 

Myrlene Garrett Benton entered the gates of Heaven on February 12, 2014. 

The family will receive visitors from 12 noon until 1:45 p.m. prior to the funeral, Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Byrd Funeral Home, with the funeral to follow at 2:00 p.m.  A graveside service will be held immediately after the funeral at Gardens of Memory with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing.The family will accept flowers. 

Mrs. Benton was born November 18, 1925 in Dale County, AL where she spent her childhood.  She met the love of her life, Ira Comer Benton, at his homecoming celebration as he returned from World War II.  They married and raised four children on their farm in Sigma (near Columbia) AL.

She attended church at Ashford Assembly of God where she taught Sunday school to children, and was active in the Women’s Ministry.  She also served in various other ministry roles throughout her life. 

As a young woman she enjoyed working as a sales clerk at Kress and Newberry’s in Dothan, AL.  Her husband promised her that he would provide her with a business.  In the late 1960’s, they opened Benton’s Grocery which she owned and operated until the age of 83.  While she sold groceries at her country store, she exemplified a Christ-like example to everyone who entered.

Survivors include her four children and their spouses:  Gaylon Benton (Barbara) of Helena, AL, Sheila Benton Azar (Mike) of Dothan, AL, Stan Benton (Mary Elizabeth) of Sigma, AL, and Melinda Benton Griffith (Charles) of Calera, AL.

She is also survived by seventeen grandchildren: Michael Benton (Alica), Sarah Benton, Stephen Benton (Kelly), David Jones (Molly), Joseph Jones (Cassie), Thomas Azar, Michael Azar, Delaney Elizabeth Benton, Felicia King (Eric), Brittney Filion (Kris), and Zach Griffith; eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by:  her parents, Henry Matthew and Lessie Elizabeth Garrett, her husband, Ira Comer Benton, her grandson, Daniel Bryan Benton, her three sisters and a brother.
