SLOCOMB. . .Polly Whatley Fulford, a former resident of Slocomb, died late Monday afternoon, January 15, 2024, in Hartford Health Care. She was 89.


            Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M. Thursday, January 18, 2024, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Larry Newton officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, near Headland. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 11:30 A.M. Thursday at the mortuary in Headland.


            Mrs. Fulford was born and reared in the Pleasant Plains community of Houston County, daughter of the late James W. Whatley and Alma Gamble Whatley. She was a graduate of Ashford High School. Mrs. Fulford lived in various locations in the U. S. and overseas while her husband served in the U. S. Army. She also lived in Dothan before moving to the Big Creek community in Houston County in 1978. Mrs. Whatley was a member of the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, Dothan Chapter No. 76, and formerly served as Grand Officer in the Alabama Eastern Star Chapter. She retired in 1999 from Sears in Dothan as Receiving Clerk after twenty-nine years employment. Mrs. Fulford was preceded in death by her husband, James Cade “Jim” Fulford, Jr., a sister, Kaotrice Aman, and four brothers, James W. Whatley, Jr., Tom Bob Whatley, Roger Whatley and Gene Whatley.                                                                    Surviving relatives include a son, James Kenny Fulford (Janice), Carriere, MS;  grandchildren, Terri Fulford and James Maxwell Fulford (Laura); and a special friend, Ann Jolls.
