Elaine Denley Slaughter

Regina Elaine Denley Slaughter, 87, of Dothan, Alabama died Thursday March 1, 2012 at Flowers Hospital.

Family members will receive friends and visitors at Evergreen Presbyterian Church,  1103 North Pontiac Avenue Dothan, Alabama, Monday March 5, 2012  at 1 pm with the Witness to the Resurrection service following at 2 p.m. Elaine will be buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Birmingham, Alabama with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing.

Elaine was born to the late George and Blanche Denley on May 9, 1925 in Egypt, Mississippi. Elaine Slaughter was born with a servant's heart. She fought tirelessly for poor children and poor families. From the moment she arrived in Dothan in 1960, Elaine found herself serving others; becoming a teacher in the early Head Start program, becoming the first woman elder in her church, and enthusiastically serving as a board member for the Hawk Houston Boys Club for over 22 years. She was an active member of Evergreen Presbyterian Church for 52 years where she served with devotion multiple terms as elder, teacher, committee chair person, and for most of those years, head of the church community outreach program. After graduating from Howard College in 1944, she married her college sweetheart, Clarence Slaughter when he returned from fighting in the Pacific. They spent a life together raising their sons, enjoying their grandchildren, serving their God and their fellow man.

Elaine is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, C. W.  Slaughter of Dothan;  three sons, Steve and Mike Slaughter of Dothan and Terry (Jennifer)  Slaughter of Birmingham. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Ryan (Kristin) Slaughter, Jonathan (Rachel) Slaughter, and Erin and Hayden Slaughter, all of Birmingham and two great grandchildren, Charlie Slaughter and Hardin Ahearn. She is also survived by a niece, Marilyn Benson also of Birmingham. Elaine is greeted in Heaven by her parents, George and Blanche Denley and her sister and best friend, Mary John Caldwell.

Whenever there was a family, a child, a friend, or a family member in need, Elaine was always there, full of comfort, full of hope, and full of love.

In lieu of flowers, the family is humbly requesting the donations be made in Elaine's memory to Evergreen Presbyterian Church or the Hawk Houston Boys Club, both of Dothan.
