Vester Leroy Wood, age 79, of Dothan, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2024 at his home surrounded by his family.

Born April 7, 1945 in Holmes County, Florida to the late Daniel William Wood and Evelyn Shirley Wood, Leroy began working with the Houston County Sheriff’s Department in 1974 and retired as a Lieutenant after 32 years. He enjoyed travelling to the mountains with friends and fishing in his spare time.

In addition to his parents, Leroy is preceded in death by his sisters, Ouida Justice and Nadine Hudson; and his brothers, Joe Wood and Eugene Wood.

He is survived by son, Darren Wood; his daughter, LaDonna Wood (Blake Murphy); his grandchildren, Caleb Smothers, Aaron Smothers (Taylor), Adam Smothers (Brittany), and Hannah Smothers (Jack Patrick); his sisters, Judy Anderson, Kay Green; his brother, Nolan Wood; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Friday, April 26, 2024 at the Ward Wilson Funeral Home Chapel with Andy Hughes officiating and Ward Wilson Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2 PM, Friday, April 26, 2024 prior to the service at the funeral home.
