Richard James Thomas, age 73, a resident of Elba, Alabama passed away unexpectedly Friday, January 4, 2019 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Graveside services will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens on Monday, January 7, 2019 beginning at 11:00 AM with Rev. Michael Woodham officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home. Visitation will be at Hayes Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon, January 6, 2019 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials be made in honor of Richard, to Enterprise Ozark Community College’s baseball program where his grandson Clay is a player.

Richard was born December 21, 1945 in Preston, England the son of Eva Sara McGowen Thomas, and James Dawson Thomas. He retired at age 50 from Shell Oil, and bought a semi truck to begin Thomas Trucking Company which he still owned and operated at his death. He loved sports and enjoyed watching his children and later his grandchildren compete. He was a stable source of help in any circumstance, and will be sorely missed by his family and friends.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 48 years; Bertie Henderson Thomas of Elba, AL, Son, Chris Thomas, Elba, AL, Daughter, April (Troy) Kelley, Elba, AL, Grandson, Jonothan Kelley, Elba, AL, Granddaughter, Sarah Reagan Kelley, Elba, AL, Grandson, Clayton Kelley, Elba, AL, Granddaughter, Sarah Presley Thomas, Enterprise, AL, and Grandson, Timothy Dustin Wallace, Enterprise, AL, along with Sister - Linda T. (John Robert) Smith, Elba, AL, Sister - Gloria (George R.) Jeffcoat, Gordon, AL, and Sister - Nancy (Tom) King of Augusta, Georgia.
