Ricky Donald “Rick” Sormrude age 71 of Samson, AL, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2022.

Funeral services will be held at 6:00 pm Wednesday, February 16, 2022 in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home Chapel in Geneva, AL with Minister Harry Adkison and Bro. Donnie Earles officiating. The family will receive friends from 5pm until service time. A private family burial will be held at Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church cemetery with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home directing.

 In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the charity of your choice.

Rick was born on January 20, 1951 in Opp, AL to the late Louis M. Sormrude and Glenda Charles “Noogie” Ritter Sormrude Caldwell. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid golfer, who coordinated various golf tournaments to benefit the children of our local schools and other charities. Rick retired after more than 25 years in the insurance business. He is best remembered as a Liberty National Life Insurance Co. agent, although he represented additional companies throughout the years. He started out as an agent and worked his way up to serve as District Manager at his retirement. Rick believed in hard work and didn’t mind putting in the “sweat equity” it took to get there.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by stepfather, John Caldwell, one brother, Robert “Bobby” Caldwell, one sister-in-law, Debi Sormrude and two nephews, J.R. Caldwell and Scottie Curry.

Rick is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Lawanna Powell Sormrude of Samson, AL; two daughters, Nita Kelley(Jason) of Headland, AL, Erin Hool (Greg) of Auburn, AL; six grandchildren, Paige Oglesby(Kole) and Bailey Holland, all of Auburn, AL, Olivia Holland and Wyatt Holland both of Enterprise, AL, Jacob Kelley of Headland, AL, Elliott Hool  of Auburn, AL; one great grandson, Walker Oglesby of Auburn, AL,  one great granddaughter(on the way), Jenson Jane Oglesby of Auburn, AL; his siblings, Ron Sormrude (Pat) of West Palm Beach, FL, Royce “Yogi” Sormrude of Samson, AL, Richard Caldwell(Darlene) of Jay, FL, Russell Caldwell (Theresa) and Rebecca “Becky” Caldwell all of Freeport, FL, Traci Jenkins (Joe) of Samson, AL; sister- in- law, Gloyce Curry (Joe) of Samson, AL, two brothers- in- law, Earl Powell of Samson, AL and Buddy Powell (Mary) Cottondale, FL; and numerous special nieces and nephews.
