Robert M. Helms, 71, a resident of Dothan passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at Noland Hospital following an extended illness.


Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, January 29, 2024, at Enon Church of Christ with Minister Samuel Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Glover Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service.


Flowers will be accepted.


Robert was born February 14, 1952, in Dothan to the late Tullis Eddie & Charity Rosell (Parmer) Helms. He spent the early years of his life in Abbeville and was a 1971 graduate of Abbeville High School where he lettered in football, and also played some semi-professional football in Midland City. Robert attended Wallace Community College and worked as a salesman in retail clothing for 49 years. He worked for businesses such as Blumberg’s, Glawson & Pierce, Yancey Parkers, Azars, and most recently SCI-2-Way. Robert worked closely with local law enforcement and first responders in this area for many years. He coached City League girls' softball for several years and was a member of the Dothan Kiwanis Club for many years, where he previously served as President. Robert was a faithful member of Enon Church of Christ where he served as an elder. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.


He is preceded in death by his parents; three infant siblings, Terry Randall, Christine, and Julia Mae; and a sister, Magalene Helms Hardwick.


He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sharma Miles Helms of Dothan; a son, Tut Helms (Courtney) of Dothan; two daughters, Heather Helms of Birmingham, and Ivye Wilbourn (Patrick) of Blakely, GA; his German daughter, Anna Lena Bolz (Ben) and children, Feli & Constantine of Hamburg, Germany; a brother, Eddie Helms (Betty) of Clanton; a sister, Dorathy Helms (Jan Thompson) of Montgomery; brother-in-law, Charlie Miles, Jr. (Cindi); sister-in-law, Sharlene Ward (Mike); four grandchildren, Jack Helms, Bailey Helms, Kolie & Grace Wilbourn; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.


Serving as active pallbearers, Mike Anderson, Jake Anderson, Benny Butler, Jeff Epperson, Mickey Farmer, and Nicco LoPorto.


Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all area First Responders.
