Retired Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Robert McPherson of Samson, Alabama, passed away Sunday, December 17, 2023. He was 93.


Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 22, 2023, in the Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home chapel in Geneva, with Reverend Luther Pumphrey officiating. Burial with military funeral honors will follow in the Travelers Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continue until service time.


Bobby McPherson was born to the late James Gilbert and Gertrude Elaine Helton McPherson, near the beginning of the Depression on August 22, 1930, in Beatrice, Alabama. While studying electrical engineering at Auburn, he was drafted into the Army, and on April 11, 1951, Private (PVT) McPherson was enrolled in the Armor school at Fort Knox. Following an aptitude test, PVT McPherson was accepted into the commissioning program as a Second Lieutenant on December 19, 1952. Later, he completed primary flight training and began his career as an Army Aviator flying both rotary and fixed-wing aircraft, including but not limited to the OV-1 Mohawk and AH-1 Cobra attack aircraft during a tour to Korea in 1964 and two tours in Vietnam spanning the late 1960s. LTC McPherson distinguished himself by earning the Master Army Aviation Badge as well as the Bronze Star, the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters, and the Army Commendation Medal.


He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, sister Madelyn, and four brothers.


Survivors include his four children Kenneth Murphy of Samson, Timothy McPherson of Columbus, Ga., Christopher McPherson of Columbus, Ga., and Adam McPherson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; other extended family include cousins, nieces, and nephews.
