Samuel Foy Williams, Jr.


 


Samuel Foy Williams, Jr., a resident of Dothan, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2011 at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. He was 90.


 


Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at Memory Hill Cemetery with Rev. John Sanders and Rev. Mike Pearson officiating with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel from 4:00 until 6:00 on Monday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 134 Quarles Court, Ozark, AL, 36360 or Greystone United Methodist Church, 4401 Fortner Street, Dothan, AL 36305.


 


Mr. Williams was born August 7, 1921 in Huntsville, Alabama and moved to Dothan at an early age. He was a 1940 graduate of Dothan High School. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corp as a pilot serving in India and China during World War II where he flew C-46s and C-47s. Following his military service he was involved in Tom’s Drive-In Restaurant. He later built Williams Motel on Montgomery Highway and then was a partner in Cherokee Construction until his retirement in 1988. He was proud to be able to fly to Washington as part of the area Honor flights.


 


Mr. Williams was an avid golfer and woodworker, a longtime member of the Dothan Country Club and the Woodsmen Golf Group and a lifetime member of the Dothan Elks Lodge. He was a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church, now Greystone United Methodist Church.


 


Mr. Williams is predeceased by his parents, Foy and Lessie Williams, a daughter, Selena Williams who died in 1968 and a brother, Tom Williams.


 


Survivors include his wife, Sara Brackin Williams of Dothan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rhett and Jo Williams and Mark and Melanie Williams, all of Dothan; 4 grandchildren, Christie Glawson of Helena, Lee Williams (Ashley) of Pelham, Marci Schoenbein (Tim) of Warrior and Kandyce Turner (Damien) of Slocomb; 6 great-grandchildren, Katie Glawson, Chase Glawson, Ava Williams, Addison Williams, Adaleigh Schoenbein and Lydia Turner; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Glenn Brown of Dothan; several nieces and nephews also survive.
