He grew up in the community of Ewell until age thirteen. In grammar school and the beginning of junior high school, he excelled academically, and he was developing as a talented baseball player. He greatly enjoyed hunting with his father in the woods around Ewell. He spent many good days as a young boy during those early days of his life. After graduation, Sam joined the Navy, where he served faithfully for twenty years.Upon retiring from the Navy, he traveled and lived in a couple of small towns in Florida. In 2000, he moved back to Midland City, where he resided until the passing of his mother in 2001.
