A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, June 2, 2023 at Sunset Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel.








Samuel “Sam” Hardy Powers, 76, of Cowarts, Alabama passed away on Friday, May 19, 2023 at Southeast Health, Dothan, Alabama. He died of kidney failure.


Sam was born April 18,1947 in Ewell, Alabama to the proud parents Elmer Hardy Powers and Tera Walding Powers. Laurice Powers Shaw, of New Orleans formerly of Birmingham, is his only surviving sibling.

He grew up in the community of Ewell until age thirteen.In grammar school and the beginning of junior high school, he excelled academically, and he was developing as a talented baseball player. He greatly enjoyed hunting with his father in the woods around Ewell. He spent many good days as a young boy during those early days of his life. However, four days before his thirteenth birthday, Sam's father passed away having suffered a massive heart attack.


After the death of his father, Sam, his loving mother, and his sister moved to Midland City, Alabama.


Sam attended Dale County High School, where he graduated in the class of 1967. After graduation, Sam joined the Navy, where he served faithfully for twenty years.Upon retiring from the Navy, he traveled and lived in a couple of small towns in Florida. In 2000, he moved back to Midland City, where he resided until the passing of his mother in 2001. Sam lived out the rest of his days in Cowarts, Alabama, and he died peacefully at Southeast Health on his birthday April 18, 2023.


He chose Sunset Memorial to handle the arrangements of his passing.

Military Honors will be held 10 am on June 10, 2023 at the Sunset Memorial Park Helicopter Pavilion.
